dc Talk - Jesus Freak - Can I Get an "Amen, Brother!"

Hello everyone =) Today I'm going to test your nerves with my very first review... of a CHRISTIAN album.

Album: Jesus Freak
Artists: dc Talk
Released: November 21, 1995
Genres: Christian contemporary, alternative rock
Obtained: passed down from my father, who purchased the CD in 2000

OVERVIEW
Now, growing up, my family was sort of Christian, which is why we got this album in the first place. However, all beliefs aside, it is my conviction that this may just be one of the greatest Christian albums of all time, and I will tell you why...
This album, unlike an overwhelming majority of albums which solely focus on "Holy God, Praise Jesus, Praise God, Worship, Worship, Praise, Praise" and so on, this album delves into a wide range of subjects that almost anyone could relate to, believers or not - from trying to find peace of mind amidst the hustling world of busybodies in which we live, to seeking love from parents or forgiveness from a friend, and of course, standing up for your beliefs in the face of peer persecution, and fear of the consequences of failing to live up to the standards set by those very beliefs. Let's dig deeper into each track, and find what it's really all about.
_____________________________________________________________________________

SO HELP ME GOD
The album starts with a very slow guitar riff, which quickly shifts into this very 90's funk-rock number that deals with the everyday struggles of the Christian faith and finding God's purpose for one's life. Again, I am not going to insert my own beliefs in here, but I will say that even if you don't believe in God, as part of an alternative rock album, the first track does a fine job of bringing up the energy in a hurry, and while it deals with a sombre subject, it manages to keep the mood uplifting and get to the point of the matter with out overanalyzing it.

COLORED PEOPLE
The next song gets a little more emotional, but not too much. It talks about the wonders of diversity and the beauty of the different colors of our skin - basically a poppy and cheerful anti-racism jig. Despite the line "We're colored people who depend on a holy grace," I could still see this song having been played on radios, at schools, and at peace conferences everywhere, which it was.

JESUS FREAK
The title track was, for lack of better words, EXPLOSIVE - it has received incredible public response  since they played a demo version of it at a concert in South Africa. It was the heaviest song they had ever played at the time, and it is characterized by aggressive, grunge guitar riffs, Nirvana-esque verses followed by angry rap verses by Toby McKeehan (aka TobyMac), and a loud-and-proud anthem about standing up for one's belief in Jesus in the midst of public persecution. The title comes from a 60's derogatory term for Christian believers, which has since been turned around into a term of pride among fans.

WHAT IF I STUMBLE?
What If I Stumble? is one of my favorite songs of all time, though I've never admitted it until now. As a former Christian who spent a lot of time questioning God and making more than my fair share of mistakes and seeing loads of hypocrisy everywhere I went during my days as a church-goer, I can relate to the lyrics in this song more than any of the others.

DAY BY DAY
Day By Day consistently switches back and forth between chill organ jazz and upbeat rock. It deals with trying to maintain good standing with one's values while struggling to keep up with the fast-pace of the working world. Not quite as outstanding as the 3 previous tracks, but still catchy enough to grow on you after listening to it a few times.

BETWEEN YOU AND ME
This one is mellow in comparison. If you're really big into heavy music, this song, nay, most of this album, is not for you. On top of the subtle wah-wah of the guitars is a message from one friend to another asking forgiveness for something hurtful they did or said--- Whaaaat!? I thought Christians were perfect.... :O But seriously, while the lyrics could be twisted to be about redeeming a lost relationship with Christ, it is literally a plea between two friends and that is all. Quite refreshing.

LIKE IT, LOVE IT, NEED IT
This track almost immediately jumps into vocals over top of a very old-school alternative rock sound. It tells of all the ways people try to find personal happiness, and claim that the best way is through Jesus. Not a bad track, just not at the top of my list.

JESUS FREAK (REPRISE)
A parody of the title track, featuring an apparently Elvis-infatuated preacher. Good for a quick chuckle.

IN THE LIGHT
This one is the second most popular song on the album beside Jesus Freak, and like the latter, has been covered many times and is still regularly played at various Christian concerts to this day. It's very emotional yet very upbeat; it hits you where it hurts with its verses and heals it with the uplifiting harmonies of the chorus. It's message is a slightly deeper and more personal interpretation of the previous track, and has had a major impact on the Christian world.

WHAT HAVE WE BECOME?
As you might presume from the title, this track is not a happy one. It deals with subjects such as racism, alienation and suicide, and calls the ways of the world into question in a way that might just make a faint-hearted individual suicidal as well...

MIND'S EYE
A more light-hearted, soulful track, Mind's Eye wraps up the album by attempting to answer the question asked by many believers and non-believers alike: How can one believe in something you cannot see, hear or feel?
P.S. For those who love cowbell, this may be a good track to add to your collection. =)

UNTITLED
The unlisted bonus track begins with a repeat of the riff from the introduction, followed by two minutes of silence. When the music comes in, we are greeted by soft strings and a short poem (widely known as "Alas, My Love") written and recited by Kevin Max Smith, a member of the band. Once the poem is finished, the strings continue to the end of the track over a soft hip-hop beat. Very deep, man, very deep indeed. I'm in the mood for chai tea suddenly and I don't know why....

_______________________________________________________________________________

This CD has been with me since I was a kid, which may be why it has been more influential to me than a lot of other people, and perhaps why I feel so compelled to review this album. I believe anyone who likes a good mix of rock, soul, funk and old-school hip-hop will thoroughly enjoy this album, regardless of what they believe, because no matter what your religion is, I know there are two things we can all believe in - Love, and the pursuit of happiness, and this band knows where it's at.

Can I get an "AMEN, BROTHER!" ?

If you have read this whole thing, I give you my applause and sincerest thanks. If anyone wants to comment on this review, please be respectful. Thank you and have a great day. =)

Caustic Window - Joyrex J5 EP [TBT]

Hello friends and neighbors =) Today I will be doing a track-by-track review on an old record by the infamous Richard D. James under his Caustic Window moniker. It is called Joyrex J5.

Album: Joyrex J5
Artist: Caustic Window
Released: 1992
Genre: Acid house
Obtained: 3 years ago, ripped off YouTube via stereo mix drive

OVERVIEW

Joyrex J5 is part two of a 4 part series. The sounds on Joyrex J5 are very similar to those on J4; Think of it as Side B of the two.

All the tracks on this EP remained untitled until the release of the Joyrex "Compilation" CD in 1998.

_____________________________________________________________________________

ASTROBLASTER

This is one of my favorite tracks in the entire series, because it's straight to the point, it's high energy, and it's the perfect wake-up track for any given moment. It's especially useful when you are in need of a quick alternative to an adrenaline shot. =)

ON THE ROMANCE TIP

It's been speculated that On The Romance Tip is an anagram for "into machete porn", which makes no damn sense. Nevertheless, "Romance" seems to be a fitting word to describe this piece. Just listen to those strings... It's anyone's guess how this was put together, but I'd rather not think about it, especially if it does, in fact, involve machete porn.

JOYREX J5

The title track for this EP sounds about as ominous and futuristic as Joyrex J4, with its unorthodox bass  synth riffs, ghost-like backing melodies and surreal sound effects. Mainly enjoyed by the more eccentric music lovers.

UNTITLED

This track (known by fans as “R2D2” due to its bleepy tune) was not included in the 1998 Caustic Window compilation, which is not only sad, it's unfair. This is one of the best tracks in the series, and there was PLENTY of room for it on the CD. What the heck, Richard?? Anyway, it's one of my favorites because of its chirpy sounds and its happy mood. It reminds me of little critters from old cartoons bouncing around down a main street, full of energy on a sunny day in the city.

_____________________________________________________________________________

For those who like listening to each Joyrex EP individually, I might recommend this album above all the others. The variation and intricate composure of the tracks within put it right beside, if not a step above, the Joyrex J4 EP, in my most humble opinion.

Thanks for reading, have a great day! =)

The Offspring - Smash - Golden Oldies of Punk Rock.

Hello friends and neighbors =) For a little while, I will be going through my personal music collection in chronological order, while I build up a collection of great underground or unsigned musicians I would like to promote. Tonight, I will be doing an old favorite: Smash by The Offspring.

Album: Smash
Artist: The Offspring
Released: April 8, 1994
Genre: Punk rock
Obtained: 1 week ago, passed down from my father who purchased the CD in 1994

OVERVIEW
Smash may or may not be the most well-known Offspring album ever, but it sure has the greatest number of hits. The band started out as being a very punk-based band, but over the years have slowly shifted to the hard rock side, while still holding on to their punk roots. Smash sees the group right in the middle of this shift, and this 50/50 combination of angry hard-rock sound and tenacious punk rock vocals, is mind-blowingly perfect, whether you're driving, kicking it in your backyard, or in the bedroom, battling your teen angst, or doing other things...
While they may try to portray an outer image of being these crude, anti-parental-advisory, in-your-face hardcore dudes, much of their music conveys a strong moral and/or personal message beneath the wailing, such as in songs like "Bad Habit" (a song about extreme road rage), "Self Esteem" (a guy who endures constant emotional abuse from his girlfriend), "Gotta Get Away" (paranoid schizophrenia, or something similar), and "Come Out and Play" (gang violence in schools).
Other non-charted classics include "Genocide" and the title track, "Smash." The former is one of your typical "this-is-what's-wrong-with-society" type tracks, while the latter is a loud anthem of non-conformity. Both tracks use a melody (after the chorus of "Genocide" and after the outro speech that would be re-used in the song "Change The World" on the 1997 album Ixnay on the Hombre. It seems they really liked that tune and were hoping to make a hit single out of it. Sadly, it didn't work. No matter. The album went on to sell over 9.5 million copies, and rightly so.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an album no rock lover should be without. It's got something for everyone, from Ska-style party music for the jokers and tokers to heavy grunge for the angsty teens to super-fast power punk for the road ragers. One of my favorite rock albums of all time. Thanks Dad =)

Thanks for reading, and have a great day! (Good morning to my friends in Europe!) =)

Caustic Window - Joyrex J4 [TBT].

Hello friends and neighbors =) Today I will be doing a track-by-track review on an old record by the infamous Richard D. James under his Caustic Window moniker. It is called Joyrex J4.

Album: Joyrex J4
Artist: Caustic Window
Released: 1992
Genre: Acid house
Obtained: 3 years ago, ripped off YouTube via stereo mix drive

OVERVIEW
Joyrex J4 is part one of a 4 part series. That music like this was being created during the days of "No Limits" and "Everybody Dance Now" is almost unimaginable, unless you were there to see it happen, which I was not (I was fresh out of the oven at the same time as this record :P). It may seem a bit dated now, but back then, the sounds on this EP were way ahead of their time.
All the tracks on this EP remained untitled until the release of the Joyrex "Compilation" CD in 1998.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JOYREX J4
This track may feature one of the first instances of synthetic "wubs" ever recorded. The best part of this track isn't in the repetitive melodies (which were commonplace for techno/electronic music in the 90's), but in the ever changing percussion underneath. That's where the magic is. Mostly though, this is an edgy, almost aggressive dance track.

POPCORN
This is a remix of Gershon Kingsley's 1969 hit "Pop Corn". The intro, with its quiet start, followed by a moog-y bassline under a high-pitched, high-passing sustained note, does a fine job getting listeners
attention, and does not fail to maintain the energy and nostalgia of the classic tune. For anyone who's been collecting Popcorn covers, this one should be at the top of your list.

AFX 114
The third track is merely an aggressive drum beat with some subtle effects, which would later be used on the track "Phlange Phace" on The Aphex Twin's Xylem Tube EP. This beat is almost as catchy and recyclable as the famous Amen Break (almost).

CORDIALATRON
Cordialatron is much slower and more laid-back, letting us drift away with its reverberating piano melodies and chill beats. Great for walking downtown on any summer day. Love it.

ITALIC EYEBALL
Italic Eyeball seems like something that should have waited to be released on the Polygon Window album Surfing On Sine Waves. It's soft, it's mellow, yet it has creepy voices and a fast and unorthodox beat. This track is better listened to with subwoofers because at least half of the essence of this song lies in the bassline alone. By the way, what's with the name? Could this be another one of his clever anagrams?

PIGEON STREET
Just a short little happy chune to end the album on a good note. (No pun intended.... or was it?)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Joyrex series is extremely rare, and, if you can find a physical copy, extremely expensive, especially if you live outside the UK like me. But for uber RDJ fans, it is a must-have, no doubt. As for the rest of you, I'm not explicitly telling to you to rip it off the internet wherever possible buuuttt..........

Thanks for reading, have a great day! =)

Squarepusher - Ufabulum Review.

Hello friends and neighbors =) Today I will be doing a track-by-track review on a harsh and psychotic yet quite incredible album by  Warp artst Tom Jenkinson, also known as Squarepusher. It is called Ufabulum.

Album: Ufabulum
Artist: Squarepusher
Released: May 15, 2012
Genres: IDM, glitch, drum and bass, dubstep, neo-trance
Obtained: 2 weeks ago, purchased CD @ HMV

OVERVIEW
Squarepusher is one of the more well-known IDM artists out there, and has always been quite the experimentalist, as most musicians of his palette are. He is usually found playing either with glitchy jungle and/or drum and bass elements, or using live instruments to give his tracks a more jazz feel. As the latter was the case for AT LEAST 3 of the preceding albums (not including Solo Electric Bass, which would make 4), Ufabulum being the exact opposite has seemed to be the cause of many a heart attack among Squarepusher fans recently.
Ufabulum consists mainly of choppy drum n bass beats, and layers upon layers of chip synths and chimes, buzzing bass and spacey sound effects that, unless you have a fine-tuned ear for this style of music, make much of the album nearly impossible to follow. However, for those that do possess the ability to process multiple sounds flying at them all at once (namely, persons with ADD/ADHD), this album is quite fantastic, for the most part.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4001
The first track begins  with a relatively simple yet familiar DnB/glitch beat under soft, barely audible atmospheric synths sprinkled with a light acid bass. Right at 2:00 the beat explodes into an epic theme-song melody, which acts as the catchy hook repeating between acid FX solos, and leaving remnants of its presence therein. A brilliant track overall; I could personally get lost in the placid psychosis of it all again and again.

UNREAL SQUARE
The second track instantly sucks you in with its catchy chiptune-like melody, which is repeated and messed with through the whole track. I admit when I first heard the sample displayed on iTunes, I was hesitant to buy the album because of the horribly off-beat solo at 3:00; thankfully it was only 10 seconds long. However, the crescendo afterward and everything that followed was enough to make me not only change my mind, but fall in love with the track as a whole.

STADIUM ICE
Stadium Ice is a nice change of pace - relatively calm beat, mellow yet cheery melodies.  There is a considerable bit of energy in this track as well, but it comes not from psychotic glitch, but from the fact that the melodies go farther than mere catchy techno string loops. The music and the title does indeed remind one of skating on a large ice rink in a dark stadium under a spotlight. Truly inspiring.

ENERGY WIZARD
Energy Wizard almost seems to fit right in line with the previous track like a puzzle piece, or a sequel. Same beat, same instruments, same chords. Near the middle, the mood changes from cheery and exciting to sombre and emotional. Although it seems a bit like a distorted copy of Stadium Ice, it is still a very uplifting track.

RED IN BLUE
I find the title of this track fitting, in that putting a dark, slow, sloppy attempt at ambience such as this would be much like throwing a red paint splatter onto the center of the album cover. That's not to say it's a horrible track, or even a bad one - however, unless you're looking at it as an "intermission" track in relation to its location on the album, it simply does not belong on the album, anymore than the Japanese Bonus Track, "On Crack."

THE METALLURGIST
The Metallurgist begins with an eerie noise not unlike something you would hear on an oldies horror show, then launches into an extra-distorted mess of percussion, which sounds very interesting at first, but soon becomes repetitive. Not worth paying a whole lot of attention to the details, better to simply let your ears ride on the waves and enjoy it, at least until it comes to an abrupt stop shortly before 4:00.

DRAX 2
Supposedly, Drax 2 is considered one of the "main" tracks on this album. I find it to be a bit too dark and airy to be an outstanding track, due to its slow twilight-zone string melodies and beat repetition. It becomes more and more apparent by this stage in the album that only one set of sounds was used in the entire series of tracks, which could be really good or really bad, depending on your perspective. Drax 2 sounds much better as a standalone track.

DARK STEERING
Dark Steering, the single of the album, has the same choppy beats and string synths, but there are some differences, mainly the sound effects used in the track, which sound like processed alarm clocks, old-school Game-Boys and revving motors, among many, many other things. There are so many places your mind can go with such a cluttered yet carefully composed mess of a track, such a mixture of adrenaline and mixed emotions. This track is probably the most outstanding track on the entire album, if not the entire Squarepusher discography.

303 SCOPEM HARD
The intro sound effects seem to follow up on the ending of Dark Steering. This track seems a lot angrier, however; the tempo is considerably higher, and there are a lot more prevalent acid effects and the "revving motors" I mentioned earlier are a lot harsher. As far as those string synths, well... there are none here. Great track when you've been fired from work or are getting ready for a boxing match and you're feeling a little extra crazy.

ECSTATIC SHOCK
Clever title, but I found this track to be quite the opposite of "ecstatic." It seems like Mr. Jenkinson tried to wind down the album with something much similar to "4001," but I found the lack of punch in the percussion made this track seem a lot more lackluster than it was probably meant to be.  It's actually almost hard to believe this is the final track because the ending is so static and abrupt, it makes you feel like you bought a pirated copy with the last 10 seconds of the audio chopped off.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, I quite enjoyed this album in its entirety. While the repeated use of the same drums and synths in each track can get a little monotonous despite the album's glitchy and experimental nature, the tracks usually tend to flow almost flawlessly, the way the beginning of almost every track sounds similar to the ending of the one priior to it. If you like energetic, glitchy electronica, I would definitely recommend this album.

1. Unreal Square
2. 4001
3. Dark Steering
4. Stadium Ice
